BACKGROUND OF CHROME ORE

It was in the 17th century when chrome was first revealed as a metal, but it was only in the19th century when it was used in industry. In the 20th century, the use of chrome ore exploded because of industrialization and increase in augmenting demand for stainless steel utensil in the world. Chromium usage can be divided into 3 categories:

Metallurgy: 90%

Chemical: 5%

Refractory and Foundry: 5%.

Chrome ores are converted into ferro chrome through smelting with carbon or silicon.

CHINA, JAPAN AND EUROPEAN UNION MARKET FOR CHROME ORES 

There are emerging markets of chrome ore but China is the major consumer of chrome ores produced worldwide. The majority of chrome ores imported into China over the last decade have been from South Africa, Kazakhstan and Pakistan. India recently has made exporting of chrome ores to China more difficult by imposing a tax of almost 40%. The rising demand for stainless steel and the rapid expansion of stainless steel industry in China is creating a worldwide shortage of Chrome Ores. This allows new sellers from different parts of the world become new player in the Chinese chrome market.

Iran is a relatively new supplier of chrome ores to the world's market. The quality of chrome ores in Iran are within the ranges 28-40% Cr2O3 types. Higher grades in the 45% Cr2O3 are also available, but in limited quantity.
